James River shellfish harvesting closure lifted

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A portion of the James River has reopened to harvesting shellfish.

Virginia public health officials closed the section in the Newport News area of the James to shellfish harvesting on Sept. 9 because of waters that had been fouled by sewage.

The ban involved oysters and claims, but not crabs or fin fish.

The Virginia Department of Health says the reopening was effective Saturday.
