Chesapeake to demolish historic former schoolhouse

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — A historic former schoolhouse in Chesapeake will be torn down.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1s9z3IR ) reports that the Chesapeake School Board approved demolition of the former Great Bridge schoolhouse on Monday.

The four-room structure was built in the early 20th century. It hasn’t been used since engineers determined in 2010 that it wasn’t safe.

Last summer, school division officials said anyone wanting to preserve the building would have a year to come up with funding and a plan. They estimated repairs would cost more than $1 million.

The administration didn’t receive any formal proposals to save the building.
