Driver charged with DUI after fatal pedestrian crash

WASHINGTON — A man is dead after officials say a drunk driver struck him in Loudoun County Friday night.

Jeffrey Carter, a 53-year-old from Sterling, Virginia, attempted to cross Cascades Parkway south of Middlefield Drive at about 10 p.m. Friday when he was hit by a Ford Explorer traveling northbound.

Emergency crews transported Carter to the Lansdowne Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital where he later died.

The driver, Pierpaolo Verrone, a 47-year-old of Sterling, was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Verrone stayed at the scene following the crash.

Verrone was charged with DUI. His blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash has not been released.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision.
