NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Navy says the commander of the Norfolk-based attack submarine Newport News has been relieved of his duties.

The Virginian-Pilot reports ( that Cmdr. Christopher Tarsa was fired from his position Friday, just over a year after he took command of the submarine last August.

In a statement, officials said that his boss, Capt. Paul Snodgrass, had "lost confidence in Tarsa's ability to serve effectively." He was reassigned to the staff of the commander of Submarine Force Atlantic.

A Navy spokesman said the firing was "not related to his professional performance."

Cmdr. Roger Meyer has assumed command of the submarine until a permanent replacement is named.
