NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Chesapeake man has pleaded guilty to giving $50,000 to a public official in an effort to steer Navy contracts toward his business.

Timothy Miller pleaded guilty on Thursday to giving a gratuity to a public official. He was originally also charged with bribing a public official, but made a plea deal in federal court in Norfolk on Thursday.

Prosecutors said Miller was part of a wide-ranging scheme that involved paying off officials at the Navy’s Military Sealift Command.

Those two public officials as well as Miller’s former co-workers have already pleaded guilty in the case.

Miller is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 7. He faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
