Correction: Marine Training story

Monday - 7/21/2014, 5:08pm  ET

BLACKSTONE, Va. (AP) -- In a story July 19 about military training exercises, The Associated Press, relying on a news release from the Marine Corps, reported erroneously where the training would take place. The military will be using the private Falwell Airport in Lynchburg as a staging area, but no training exercises will occur in the city.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Marines, sailors head to Va. for training

Camp Lejeune Marines, sailors to conduct pre-deployment exercises in Virginia

BLACKSTONE, Va. (AP) -- Residents in Southside and central Virginia could see military aircraft and ground vehicles through July 30th as Marines and sailors prepare for a deployment later this year.

They are from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune. While they'll primarily be based at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, the military says they all be training in Natural Bridge, Dinwiddie and Creeds.

The Marines will notify residents in the immediate area of their training by going door-to-door.

A news release says many of the exercises will involve what is called situational training. They are intended to replicate the missions they're likely to face during their deployment.
