RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Longtime Virginia lawmaker Henry Marsh is resigning from the state Senate.

The 80-year-old Marsh submitted a letter of resignation to Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Tuesday, saying his resignation is set for July 3.

Marsh is a civil rights lawyer and was the first black mayor of the Confederacy's former capital city of Richmond.

In his letter, Marsh said he looks forward to taking advantage of new opportunities to continue his service to the commonwealth.
