SW Va. man dies after being shot by deputy sheriff

DAMASCUS, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a Washington County deputy sheriff shot and killed a man who threatened him with a handgun.

According to police, the deputy and a state trooper were responding to a call about a domestic disturbance involving gunfire when the shooting occurred Friday morning. The deputy entered a home in Damascus and was threatened by the armed suspect. The deputy shot the man.

Fifty-six-year-old Michael W. Huffman of Damascus was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he died. The deputy and the trooper, whose names were not released, were not injured.

State police are investigating.
