Route 50 reopens after flooding in Fairfax County

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County police say sudden, heavy rains flooded a stretch of eastbound U.S. Route 50 in Fairfax, closing the busy roadway for part of the afternoon.

Police say the eastbound lanes were blocked Friday afternoon but had reopened by 5 p.m. Traffic was being rerouted through the Fair Oaks Mall parking lots.

There has also been flooding in the area of Old Courthouse Road and Besley Road.

Police are urging commuters to keep a close watch on road conditions and make detours or alternate travel plans if necessary.
