FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — The hiring of a man who won a Super Bowl ring with the Washington Redskins doesn’t mean George Mason will be adding football anytime soon.
GMU introduced Brad Edwards as its new athletic director Monday. Edwards played nine seasons in the NFL and was the defensive co-captain of the team that won the title in the 1991 season.
But university President Angel Cabrera said the sport that made Edwards famous isn’t on the way. Cabrera says the “financial numbers of football are very tough” at a time when schools are under scrutiny for rising tuition and fees and heavy student debt.
Edwards starts his job July 1. He’s replacing Tom O’Connor, who is retiring.
