Familiar foes Virginia, Maryland vie for CWS berth

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia will face a familiar foe with a berth in the College World Series on the line.

The Cavaliers (47-13) and Maryland (39-21) open the best-of-three super regional on Saturday.

Virginia is appearing in the super regionals for the fifth time in six years, while the Terrapins are appearing for the first time in program history. Maryland ended South Carolina’s 28-game home winning streak in the NCAA tournament with a pair of victories over the Gamecocks last weekend.

Both teams are on a roll.

The Cavaliers has a 32-3 record at home; Maryland has won 14 of its last 16 and beat the Cavaliers 7-6 in the teams’ only meeting this season. They met in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, the Terps’ final appearance before moving to the Big Ten.
