Ceremony to honor Virginia Guard soldiers

SANDSTON, Va. — About 145 Virginia National Guard soldiers will be recognized for their service in Afghanistan.

The National Guard says the soldiers are from the Emporia-based 1710th Transportation Company. They returned home in February after conducting nine months of transportation support operations in Afghanistan.

The “Freedom Salute” ceremony is set for Sunday at the Greensville County High School gymnasium in Emporia. As part of the ceremony, the soldiers will receive the Virginia Governor’s National Service Medal, which was established in 2005 to recognize Virginia Army and Air National Guard members called into active service since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
