HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — A 142-acre homestead and a grist mill in Rockingham County have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Plains Mill and the Melrose Caverns and Harrison Farmstead joined the national register in May. They were placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in March.
Union and Confederate soldiers visited Melrose Cavern during the Civil War. Some left their names on the walls.
Plains Mill was built in 1847 and was in continuous use for 138 years.
Virginia Department of Historic Resources spokesman Randy Jones tells The Daily News-Register (http://bit.ly/1nSqHWf ) that the national register doesn’t provide any special protections to sites. But he says the designation helps communities and people recognize their historic resources.
