Martinsville had highest jobless rate in April

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The city of Martinsville had the highest jobless rate in Virginia in April.

The Virginia Employment Commission says the city's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 11.2 percent. That's down from 11.7 in March and down from 12.5 percent a year ago.

The statewide rate for April was 4.7 percent.

Nationally, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for April was 5.9 percent. Rates dropped from last year in 357 metropolitan areas, increased in 12 and were flat in three.

Arlington County and the city of Falls Church had Virginia's lowest jobless rate with 3.2 percent in April.

The Danville region had the highest unemployment rate among Virginia's metropolitan regions at 6.9 percent.

The metropolitan region that includes the Charlottesville area had the lowest rate of 3.7 percent.
