EWING, Va. (AP) -- A historic marker is rising in the far southwest corner of Virginia in memorial to a pioneering agricultural educator.

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources marker will recognize the work of William H. Starnes. He was an influential educator in southwestern Virginia in the first quarter of the 20th century.

Starnes traveled to remote farms in the region to deliver lectures to farmers on science-based farming methods. He founded the agricultural department at Thomas Walker High School and the Ewing Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.

The dedication ceremony for Starnes' historic marker will be held Tuesday at Walker High in Ewing.
