2 Isle of Wight teens face explosives charges

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) — Two Smithfield High School students face charges of making explosive devices.

The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that the suspects are a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy.

The sheriff’s office says deputies searched the 15-year-old’s home after he asked another student where he could get a gun on May 1. A third student overheard the conversation and reported it.

Deputies found ammunition, a water bottle filled with gasoline, fuses and a container of what appeared to be gunpowder.

Copper pipes, gunpowder and other items were seized from the 14-year-old’s home.

Both teens were charged Wednesday with manufacturing, possessing, or using fire bombs or explosive materials or devices; conspiracy and other counts.

The 14-year-old also is charged with possessing burglary tools.
