Monday - 5/5/2014, 12:36pm  ET

WASHINGTON - Move over snowbirds, Virginia is for retirees.

According to Bankrate.com, Virginia is the 10th best state for retirement based on factors like average sunshine, cost of living, health care access and crime.

Virginia dropped four spots from its No. 6 listing last year, according to the site.

Florida, known for its high population of retirees, sunshine and lack of income taxes, ranked 39th on the list.

Maryland was ranked 42nd for its high cost of living and taxes. D.C. was not rated and West Virginia landed in the bottom five.

Virginia benefited from middle-of-the-road scores on taxes, health care, crime and humidity.

South Dakota topped the list because of its low taxes, low crime rate and a high wellness score. Rounding out the top five are Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming.
