NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln is marking a milestone as part of its refueling and complex overhaul at a shipyard in Newport News.
Huntington Ingalls Industries says shipbuilders recently placed a new upper-level structure on top of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier's island, which is similar to an airport control tower.
The structure will contain the ship's primary flight control systems when outfitted and serves as the platform for many of its various radars and antenna systems.
The Lincoln arrived at Newport News Shipbuilding in March 2013. The overhaul is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers undergo a refueling and complex overhaul once in their 50-year lifespan. The work includes refueling the reactors, repairing and upgrading the ship infrastructure and modernizing the ship's combat and communication systems.
