NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Newport News fire officials are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed a church.

Newport News Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Pincus says the Mount Gilead Tabernacle Church was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at 4:42 a.m. Sunday. The church's roof collapsed before the fire could be extinguished.

Firefighters remained on the scene extinguishing hot spots until Sunday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Pincus says in a news release that the building has been condemned.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.
