Loudoun County may cut school transportation to trim budget

WASHINGTON — The Loudoun County, Va. public school system is facing a $38 million budget shortfall for 2015.

The Washington Post reports that the school system might cut bus service to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. More than 200 students are enrolled at the magnet school this year, and getting rid of the bus service would save $390,000 for the system.

Also being discussed is the closure of four smaller elementary schools: Lincoln; Hamilton; Hillsboro; and Aldie. Shutting down these schools could save $2 million per year. The Post reports that 33 foreign-language teachers could be laid off to save $2.5 million.

The Loudoun County school board will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the School Administration Building in Ashburn. It’s the last hearing before the board makes final budget decisions.
