RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The ever-expanding Virginia Landmarks Register has some additions, including a 142-acre farmstead in Rockingham County and a grand hotel in Virginia Beach.

The additions are among 11 added to the register by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Each will be forwarded to the National Park Service for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Rockingham County's Melrose Caverns and Harrison Farmstead are located along U.S. Route 11. Melrose Caverns was opened in 1929 as a roadside attraction. But Union and Confederate soldiers visited it during the Civil War, some leaving their names on the walls.

The Virginia Beach addition is The Cavalier Hotel, which dates to 1927. It is the last of the pre-World War II beachfront hotels in the city.
