Alexandria proposes park named after Ruthanne Lodato

Monday - 4/7/2014, 11:38am  ET

WASHINGTON --A group of Alexandrians hope to honor a late music teacher by naming a new playground in her memory.

The City of Alexandria is asking the public to weigh in on the idea of naming a playground at the Nannie J. Lee recreation center after Ruthanne Lodato.

Lodato was shot at her front door on Feb. 7 and later died. Police have linked her death to two other unsolved homicides in the city.

See related story here.

Lodato was a beloved music teacher in the community, and a volunteer for Kelley Cares Foundation, which works to create opportunities for children with special needs. The playground is planned to be accessible for kids of all abilities.

Neighbors can email or mail their comments for review by the City Council Naming Commission by May 2.

Those interested in emailing their comments can send them to jack.browand@alexandriava.gov with the subject line "Ruthanne Lodato Memorial Playground." Or, residents can call 703-746-5504 or mail their comments to RPCA to the attention of Jack Browand, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria VA 22314.

All comments received or postmarked by Friday, May 2 will be reviewed by the City Council Naming Committee.
