HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Family members of slain sailor Mark Mayo say he died a hero -- but they want to know why.

Mayo's parents and oldest brother spoke with reporters Wednesday in Hagerstown, where Mayo grew up.

They say he was a hard-working military policeman who died protecting others at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.

The Navy says Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mayo was shot Monday when he dove in front of a petty officer to protect her from a civilian who had disarmed her.

The Navy agrees with Mayo's mother, Sharon Blair, and father, Decondi Mayo, that their son was a hero.

But Timothy Borum says he doesn't understand how his brother was killed on a military base, where he says service members should be safe and protected.
