RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Commonwealth University is expanding and renovating the Cabell Library.

The $50.8 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1heyLat ) reports that the university broke ground for the project earlier this month during spring break.

The project includes a 93,000-square-foot addition on the north side of the building. About 63,000 square feet of the existing space will be renovated.

The construction will be paid for with state funds. An additional $10 million is being raised privately to help furnish the addition and build an endowment.

It's the library's first major improvement in four decades. The library was built in 1970 and several floors were added in 1975.
