RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A former state Democratic Party chairman is leading a petition drive for a voter referendum related to a proposed minor league baseball stadium in Richmond.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Q0PTdU ) reports that a group headed by Paul Goldman has filed paperwork with the Richmond Circuit Court to begin collecting signatures.
Mayor Dwight Jones has proposed a stadium for the Richmond Flying Squirrels as part of a development that would include a slavery museum, hotel and apartments in the city's historic Shockoe Bottom district.
Goldman says the proposed referendum involves two changes to the city charter. One would establish a historic review commission that would issue a report before development could occur. The other would establish procedures for council members to seek voter advice or approval on matters related to the project.
