Page County had highest jobless rate in January

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Page County had the highest jobless rate in Virginia in January.

The Virginia Employment Commission says the county's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 11.7 percent. That's up from 9 percent in December and down from 12.5 percent a year ago.

The statewide rate for January was 5.4 percent.

Nationally, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for January was 7 percent. Rates dropped from last year in 367 metropolitan areas, increased in three and were flat in two.

Arlington County had Virginia's lowest jobless rate with 3.3 percent in January.

The Danville region had the highest unemployment rate among Virginia's metropolitan regions at 7.6 percent.

The Washington metropolitan region that includes Arlington and Alexandria had the lowest rate of 4.2 percent.
