Historically black schools in Va., W.Va. get funds

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Two historically black land-grant universities in Virginia and West Virginia are the recipients of U.S. Department of Agriculture grant funding intended to strengthen research and teaching at those institutions.

The grants to Virginia State University in Petersburg and West Virginia State University in Institute are getting a portion of $35 million through the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Virginia State will receive nearly $600,000 and West Virginia State $444,000 under several grants to promote research. West Virginia State will also receive nearly $600,000 for extension activities, while Virginia State will receive nearly $1 million to acquire and improve food sciences and equipment and facilities, including libraries.

Finally, both schools will receive teaching grants. Virginia State is in line for $300,000, while West Virginia State was awarded $650,000.
