ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A woman and her daughter have been convicted of smuggling kilograms of heroin into the U.S. from Guatemala.
Forty-seven-year-old Alicia Garcia Rivera and 27-year-old Kenia Verges, both of Providence, R.I., were convicted of conspiracy to import heroin into the United States in federal court in Alexandria, Va., on Monday. They each face a maximum of 20 years in prison at sentencing on May 29.
According to court records, Garcia Rivera and Verges worked for an international cartel and smuggled two kilos of heroin at a time in their luggage.
