Richmond takes steps to reduce jail population

Monday - 2/24/2014, 8:39am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Richmond is establishing a day reporting center and taking other steps to reduce its jail population.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1cVBXar) reports that the day reporting center will serve as an incarceration alternative for people convicted of certain crimes who are deemed to be low-risk offenders. It's scheduled to open March 3.

Richmond officials also are trying to increase the city's use of electronic monitoring. City prosecutors are seeking fewer bonds in cases involving relatively minor charges.

The city has hired GEO Group Inc. to run the day reporting center.

In recent years, the city's typical daily jail population has been about 1,350 inmates.

The city's new jail will have a capacity of 1,032 beds. A formal opening will be held in the spring.
