More sewage sludge proposed in Caroline County

Monday - 2/24/2014, 11:30am  ET

BOWLING GREEN, Va. (AP) -- Synagro Central LLC asking state regulators to allow it to spread treated sewage sludge on more farm fields in Caroline County.

The company is seeking to add eight tracts totaling more than 3,800 acres to its existing permit.

Beth Biller with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality tells The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/1k04krT ) that the tracts range in size from about 80 acres to around 600. The tracts are scattered around the county.

Biller says the existing permit allows Synagro to apply treated sewage sludge to 5,617 acres in the county.

Sewage sludge is fertilizer derived from human wastes.

Changes to the state's biosolids regulations that became effective Sept. 1, 2013, will be incorporated into Synagro's amended permit.

The public meeting will be held Tuesday at Town Hall in Bowling Green.
