Carilion plans outpatient facility in old grocery

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Carilion Clinic plans to convert a former grocery store in Roanoke into an outpatient clinic.

The plan requires the Roanoke City Council's approval of a revision of the city's performance agreement with the property's owner, Valley Bank.

Council members will consider the proposed revision during their meeting Tuesday night. The proposed change would allow the building to be used for a clinic instead of retail.

Carilion spokesman Eric Earnhart tells The Roanoke Times ( ) that an outpatient clinic would be a productive reuse of a building that has been vacant for more than four years.

The building formerly housed a Ukrop's grocery store. The store closed in 2009 and Valley Bank later bought the property at a foreclosure auction.
