RICHMOND, Va. -- Hunters in Virginia killed more deer, bears and turkeys in the fall and winter seasons compared with the same period of a year ago.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says nearly 243,000 deer were killed in Virginia in the fall, up 13 percent from the 2012 period. Bedford, Loudoun and Fauquier were again the top three counties for deer kills.

Hunters killed more than 2,300 black bears, an 8 percent increase, while the 5,351 turkeys killed represented a 21 percent increase.
