RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Gov. Terry McAuliffe is declaring a state of emergency in advance of a winter storm projected to dump several inches of snow throughout Virginia.

The governor's office announced the declaration Tuesday. It authorizes state agencies to prepare to assist local governments in responding to a major snow storm set to hit the state Wednesday.

In a statement, the governor also urged Virginians to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and be prepared for potential power outages.
