Ex-Buena Vista fire chief faces forgery charges

BUENA VISTA, Va. (AP) -- A former Buena Vista fire chief faces charges of forging certificates for swift water rescue classes that he wasn't certified to teach.

Media outlets report that a Buena Vista grand jury indicted 38-year- old Butch Lawhorn last week on 77 counts. The charges include 50 counts of forgery and 27 counts of obtaining by false pretenses.

Lawhorn is accused of falsely obtaining tuition for the classes that he taught during the summers of 2011, 2012 and 2013. He is charged with giving first responders who completed the classes forged certificates.

WDBJ-TV reports that Lawhorn (http://bit.ly/1aEH0Qd ) declined to discuss the allegations.

He faces an April 7 hearing.
