RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Electronic filing is becoming popular among candidates for local offices in Virginia.
The Virginia Public Access Project says 433 local candidates used e-filing to submit their year-end campaign finance reports this month. That's up 49 percent from January 2012, when there were 290 e-filers.
At least one candidate used e-filing in 77 of Virginia's 133 localities this year. Fairfax County had the most e-filers, 28.
State Board of Elections election services manager Chris Piper attributes the increase to an online filing system that was launched in January 2012.
