Up to 10 inches of snow expected in Virginia

Tuesday - 1/21/2014, 9:10am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Many Virginians returning to work after the long holiday weekend can expect a messy commute.

A winter storm blowing into the state is expected to dump up to 10 inches of snow in some areas, starting early Tuesday and continuing much of the day. The National Weather Service is also forecasting several days of extreme cold, which will keep the snow from melting. Strong winds in the western part of the sate were expected to cause blowing and drifting snow.

School systems around Virginia are sending students home early on Tuesday or staying closed after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews started anti-icing operations Monday. The department says crews will be out in force through the duration of the storm, treating icy roads and plowing snow.
