Transportation board votes to reduce tolls

Wednesday - 1/15/2014, 4:10pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Commonwealth Transportation Board has agreed to slash the initial tolls on two Hampton Roads tunnels by about half.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe asked for the reductions on the Midtown and Downtown tunnels, and the board unanimously complied Wednesday. The change will cost the state $82.5 million.

From Feb. 1 through the end of this year, the tolls for peak morning and afternoon hours will be $1, which is 84 cents less than originally planned. The tolls for off-peak hours were reduced from $1.59 to 75 cents.

The rates will increase each of the next two years, but will still be less than the original tolls.

Tolls for large trucks also are being reduced.

The revenue will go toward construction of the 2.1 billion Elizabeth River Tunnels project.
