Arctic blast breaks cold records in Va.

Wednesday - 1/8/2014, 5:00pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Temperatures are inching up across Virginia a day after an arctic blast broke several cold records.

The National Weather Service reports that Richmond's 10 degrees on Tuesday morning broke a record set in 1988.

Other records broken Tuesday morning include Blacksburg, minus 5 degrees; Roanoke, 1 degree; Lynchburg, 2 degrees; and Danville, 7 degrees.

Temperatures rose into the 20s Wednesday morning. But the weather still caused problems.

AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Martha Meade says calls for assistance in northern, central and western Virginia were about 50 to 60 percent higher Wednesday morning than on an average winter day.

Dominion Virginia Power is working to restore electricity to about 1,100 customers.
