Power restored following substation problem in Va.

Saturday - 1/4/2014, 6:40pm  ET

DOOMS, Va. (AP) -- Electricity has been restored to most of the customers affected by an equipment malfunction at a Dominion Virginia Power substation.

Dominion Virginia Power spokesman Dan Genest says the malfunction caused a small fire around 7 a.m. Saturday at the company's substation in Dooms in Augusta County. The fire was extinguished.

Genest says the outage affected about 19,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers and about 13,000 customers of several electric cooperatives. The malfunction and fire caused Dominion Virginia Power to lose connection points to the electric cooperatives.

As of 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Genest says Dominion Virginia Power has confirmed restoration of electricity to all but 46 customers.

The cause of the equipment malfunction hasn't been determined.
