CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating what it calls a breakdown in its response to an assault.
The department tells media outlets that Police Chief Timothy J. Longo ordered the internal investigation after reviewing a report on the incident Monday morning.
A man and woman reported being assaulted by three men on the Downtown Mall on Dec. 20. The police department says the woman didn't learn until Sunday that the case hadn't been assigned to an investigator.
Longo ordered the investigation to determine why the case wasn't immediately assigned to investigators. He also wants to determine where the breakdown occurred.
Longo also directed the department's General Investigation Bureau to investigate the assault.
