NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Eleven marble statues at the Norfolk Botanical Garden that depict famous artists have been restored.

The Virginian-Pilot ( ) reports that the restoration included cleaning lichens and scum from the statues. Missing noses were replaced. An arm on the statue of Phidias was removed and reattached with a titanium screw.

The project cost about $167,000, which included digital scans of the statues and molds to replace future broken noses. The garden is trying to raise additional funds to pay for long-term maintenance.

Sculptor Moses Ezekiel created the statues shortly after the Civil War.
