Boy, 11, saves dozens of pigs from Caroline fire

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A farm worker's 11-year-old son rescued nearly 60 pigs from a fire in Caroline County.

The Free Lance-Star reports (http://bit.ly/K8CJYU ) that authorities believe heat lamps caused the fire Monday at a Moss Neck Farm barn that housed seven pigs and about 55 piglets. Chris Golden of The Silver Cos., which owns the property, says young Daniel Fitzgerald ran to the barn and opened all the pens to free the pigs. All but three piglets made it out safely.

Daniel lives on the property with his parents and two siblings. His father, Tony Fitzgerald, is the caretaker of the 1,200-acre property.

Golden says the children help their dad with the farm chores when they aren't in school. He says that involvement and Daniel's quick thinking made the rescue possible.
