RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The board of the closed Saint Paul's College has named a new president in hopes of reopening the school.

Millard D. "Pete" Stith Jr. will continue negotiations for either a merger or a sale of the 183-acre campus in Lawrenceville.

The historically black college closed in June.

Stith tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1ezxZte ) that the board would prefer a merger or acquisition with another historically black school. But he says the board is open to discussions with other private and public institutions.

Prior to closing, St. Paul's had struggled to keep its accreditation due to financial issues and declining enrollment.

The college was founded in 1888 and was affiliated with the Episcopal Church.
