Va Medicaid expansion holds final meeting of year

Tuesday - 12/17/2013, 3:40pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia legislative commission still appears a long way from deciding whether to recommend Medicaid expansion.

The Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission held its last meeting of 2013 Tuesday. The chairman, Sen. Emmett Hanger, described it as an informational meeting with presentations from experts on issues like Medicaid fraud and federal health care law revenue provisions.

Lawmakers established the commission in a compromise between Democrats who support expansion and Republicans who oppose it because they don't trust the federal government to meet its financial obligations in the long term. The panel is tasked with ensuring that certain cost-saving reforms are achieved before expansion is considered.

Hanger said he's pleased with progress on reforms, but Del. Steve Landes said the Republican-controlled House won't be ready to act in the 2014 session.
