Storm leaves more than 42,000 in Va without power

Monday - 12/9/2013, 7:09pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A winter storm has left more than 42,000 customers in Virginia without electricity, and utilities are warning customers to prepare for outages lasting multiple days.

More than 28,300 Dominion Virginia Power customers didn't have electricity as of 6 p.m. Monday. About 26,410 of the outages are in Northern Virginia.

Dominion spokesman Dan Genest says the outages are concentrated in Springfield, Fairfax and Arlington, where a Sunday night storm coated trees with ice. He says there have been new outages throughout the day as ice melts and trees snap back into place. With another storm forecast that could bring up to 5 inches of snow Tuesday morning, he says more outages are likely.

About 12,590 outages have been reported by Virginia's electric cooperatives.

Appalachian Power reports about 1,110 outages.
