Loudoun County teacher accused of coming to school drunk

WASHINGTON – A gym teacher at Cedar Lane Elementary School in Ashburn, Va., is accused of coming to school drunk Wednesday morning and is now facing charges for his alleged conduct.

Greg Wuenschel, 48, of Ranson, W. Va., is charged with DUI, driving without a license and possession of alcohol on school property, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Spokesman Kraig Troxell says.

Wuenschel has been an employee with Loudoun County Public Schools for nine years, school public information officer Wayde Byard tells WTOP.

A fellow staff member observed Wuenschel acting in an unusual manner while in a “team talk” with kids, which Byard says is a physical education class taught by two teachers. He could not confirm the ages of the children in the class at the time.

“I think it’s important to note that at no point was student safety compromised. He was never alone with students. Staff reacted very quickly as they are trained to do if something is out of the usual,” Byard says.

After a school resource officer with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office arrived at the school and interviewed Wuenschel, he was arrested and later released on $2,500 bond. Wuenschel was not in school on Thursday.

“Our principal is sending out a message to parents detailing what happened as far as we can detail right now because it is a personnel matter,” Byard says.

The school has to go through paperwork with Wuenschel, Byard says to figure out his future employment status. Until they do, his status is to be determined, Byard says.
