FHA gives environmental OK for I-64 widening in Va

Wednesday - 12/4/2013, 12:21pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. -- Federal officials have approved an environmental impact statement for a planned widening of Interstate 64 between Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Gov. Bob McDonnell says the Federal Highway Administration's decision is a critical step in the state's effort to ease congestion and improve safety on the interstate.

The state plans to widen 75 miles of the interstate. McDonnell said Tuesday in a news release that sections will be widened as funding becomes available.

About $100 million is currently available to widen about 5 miles of I-64 in Newport News. McDonnell says the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization must include the funding in its planning documents and approve the project.
