Ex-felon helps Va inmates straighten out lives

Sunday - 11/24/2013, 11:42am  ET

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A Spotsylvania County woman who survived years of addiction and served a prison term for a felony conviction has received state recognition.

Virginia first lady Maureen McDonnell last month honored four groups or individuals for efforts to improve their communities. One of them was Lisa Thomas, whose quest is to help male and female prisons in facilities across Virginia.

The 54-year-old Thomas lives with her husband and two teenage children. She's been clean since age 30.

The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/191c4mC) reports Thomas currently works as a speaker for the Virginia Department of Corrections, visiting facilities scross the state to tell offenders they can turn their lives around, just as she did.
