ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) -- The former owner of a septic service company has been sentenced to two years in jail for illegally dumping sewage in Franklin County.
Matthew Scott Ferguson of Callaway was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in August to charges including unlawful disposal of septic water and property damage.
The Roanoke Times reports that Ferguson also was ordered to settle up on $4,100 in restitution and he was given 17 years in suspended time.
Ferguson formerly owned and operated A Plus Septic Service of Rocky Mount.
He was initially charged in May after he was caught dumping about 2,500 gallons of sewage in the yard of New Hope United Methodist Church. Police said the muck contained human waste, baby wipes and feminine hygiene products.
