RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones has unveiled plans for a $200 million development that includes a new minor league baseball stadium on Monday.
Jones said Monday during a news conference that the Shockhoe Bottom development also would include a slavery and freedom heritage site. At least $30 million will be raised for this project.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1ceUZYC) reports that protesters heckled Jones during his announcement.
The project has drawn criticism for the stadium's potential impact on a nearby slave burial ground and the history of the slave trade in Shockhoe Bottom.
Jones says the proposed development would create 400 jobs, along with 1,000 construction jobs.
The new stadium would be the Richmond Flying Squirrels' home.
